Abandon ship and liferaft survival

The trainee goes through the sequence from the alarm to a closed canopy on the raft: puts on an immersion suit, launches the raft, climbs down the embarkation ladder and completes the tasks on the water.

Challenge

The abandon-ship sequence can’t be practiced on a real vessel without risk: the raft goes overboard, people climb down the embarkation ladder to the water and handle pyrotechnics.

The goal was to let trainees practice the sequence of actions as many times as needed.

Solution

The simulator recreates the deck, the liferaft canister, an embarkation ladder that trainees climb down hand over hand, and the raft with its onboard equipment. Everything is interactive: by hand, the trainee removes the guardrail, releases the pelican hook, cuts the painter and fastens the canopy.

The "Situational events" mode includes short modules: man overboard, raft righting, pyrotechnics, first aid and the SART radar transponder.

What the trainee practices

  1. Liferaft canister at the ship’s rail before launching

    01

    Launching and boarding the liferaft

The main 13-step scenario: from the alarm signal to a closed canopy on the raft.

    1. Wait for the alarm signal
    2. Put on the immersion suit and life jacket
    3. Remove the guardrail
    4. Deploy the embarkation ladder
    5. Release the pelican hook and launch the liferaft canister
    6. Pull the painter to inflate the raft
    7. Climb down the embarkation ladder and board the raft
    8. Cut the painter with the knife
    9. Deploy the sea anchor
    10. Close the canopy
  2. Person overboard in a lifebuoy, seen from the raft

    02

    Man overboard

The casualty appears at one of ten random locations.

    1. Hear the whistle and find the person in the water
    2. Pick up the lifebuoy
    3. Throw the lifebuoy accurately to the casualty
  3. Righting a capsized raft: the trainee grips the straps on its floor

    03

    Righting the raft

The raft has capsized in the water.

    1. Climb onto the capsized raft
    2. Right the raft using the straps on its underside
    3. Pick up the bailer and bail out the raft
  4. Burning hand flare in the trainee’s hand on the raft

    04

    Pyrotechnic signals

    Signaling distress from the raft.

    1. Activate the buoyant smoke signal
    2. Ignite the hand flare
    3. Fire the rocket parachute flare
  5. First aid inside the raft: casualty mannequin and bandage

    05

    First aid

    A casualty inside the raft.

    1. Pick up a bandage
    2. Bandage the casualty’s arm
  6. Switching on the SART (search and rescue transponder)

    06

    SART radar transponder

Marking the raft’s position for rescuers.

    1. Pick up the transponder
    2. Switch it on

Results

  • The simulator was delivered to the client under contract.
  • The abandon-ship sequence, from the alarm to a closed canopy, can be practiced without going to sea.
  • The scenarios can be adapted to other vessels and life-saving appliances.
